On the relationship between received signal strength and received signal strength index of IEEE 802.11 compatible radio transceivers

چکیده
Every WiFi, ZigBee or Bluetooth compatible radio chip provides a byte of information related to the received signal strength (RSS), the so called received signal strength index (RSSI). In a given point in space, on a specific radio channel, the RSS has a unique value at a given moment in time. Still, radio chips produced by different manufacturers will report different RSSI numbers. So RSSI is only related to, but not identical to RSS. In this paper, a formula that relates RSS and RSSI is derived. The validity of this theoretical assumption is tested on various vendors’ data. For Microchip’s MRF24WB radio chip the testing is done experimentally. Keywords—received signal strength; received signal strength index; dBm; netvork interface card; WiFi; RF;

متن کاملOn the Hidden Terminal Jamming Problem in IEEE 802.11 Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
This paper addresses recent experimental measurements from an IEEE 802.11 ad hoc network testbed, which indicate a strong signal strength dependence in the ability of a hidden terminal to gain access to the radio channel. We present analytical results investigating the ‘hidden terminal jamming’ ability of the IEEE 802.11 DSSS physical layer. Results indicate that in a hidden terminal topology, ...

متن کاملA Software Radio Design Approach for Heterogeneous Wireless Access Protocol Transceivers
A study on the design of heterogeneous transceivers using the software radio approach is presented. The objective of the study is to extend the research on software radio towards the design of multi-protocol transceivers which can communicate between two or more heterogeneous wireless access technologies. A critical overview of some of the current multiprotocol software radio devices is present...

Wireless Communication increasingly influences several aspects of our. As the frequency spectrum is limited for the popular technologies IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11.x a huge effort is spent on routing, rate selection, handover, or jamming detection. Such algorithms heavily depend fast and accurate link quality estimation. In this thesis we show the strength and weaknesses of state of the art ...
